At December's Copenhagen talks, environment ministers from over 170 countries will doubtless introduce more rigorous carbon emission standards. The increased need to measure, store, reduce and eliminate carbon will drive innovation and new business opportunities around the world. This panel will review and compare the political and industrial strategies that have been taken in different countries to reduce carbon emission and compare their effectiveness.
The Atlantic Tidal Progress panel is made up of OREG members who demonstrate the utility, industrial, science and technology leadership that is putting the Minas Passage project at the front of the world effort to harness this predictable renewable resource for its energy and coastal economic development potential. Minas Basin Pulp and power is at the centre of the current phase which will see the world's three leading technologies demonstrated in the next two years. Nova Scotia Power is one of a few utilities worldwide making investment and project commitments in tidal energy. Open Hydro is their technical partner. Fundy Tidal is actively working toward smaller-scale and likely community-based tidal projects. Oceans represents the ocean science and technology industry that is bringing critical experience into the development of Tidal Power and Acadia University demonstrates the engagement of the r egion's academic researchers in informing discussions on resource extraction potential and impacts. With coordination and interlocution by OREG, this panel has already shown its ability to portray Atlantic Canada as a focus for the opportunities in tidal energy development.
